This Hyperpigmentation-Fighting Procedure Was Performed 3.2 Million Times Last Year

It’s no secret that cosmetic procedures have been on the rise over the past few years, but a new announcement by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) is proving just how major the trend has taken off. According to the ASDS, nearly 12 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2017, over 10 percent more than in 2016 and doubling since 2012, the press release reveals.
Additionally, the 2017 ASDS Survey on Dermatologic Procedures discovered that skin cancer treatments were ranked the most-performed procedure for the sixth year in a row, producing more than 3.5 million procedures. While this is certainly impressive, it was findings regarding another procedure that really surprised us. The second most-performed procedure in 2017 was lasers—clocking in at 3.2 million completed procedures—aiming to treat hyperpigmentation from sun damage, age spots and excess hair.
Unsurprisingly, injectables were another popular choice for consumers, with 2.1 million neuromodulators administered last year. In fact, injectables have been on the rise for quite some time, with neuromodulaters rising by seven percent and soft-tissue fillers increasing by 21 percent since 2012.
The reasoning behind these surges in cosmetic procedures is simple: The ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures found that people are aspiring to feel “more confident, more attractive and look as young as they feel,” and as a result they’re turning to dermatologists to achieve that. Considering technological advancements have made in-office, anti-aging options more accessible than ever, we can only assume these numbers will go up again in 2018.
